This year has been difficult for all of us survivors of the genocidal Canadian residential school systems here at the Sunshine House. During the papal visit to Canada, we shared food and feelings with each other. We witnessed the wide range of emotions as those of us impacted come to terms with what was said, what was omitted and what transpired.

The legacies of the schools is a regular topic of conversation at Sunshine House as many of us are doing our own healing in our own ways. We are very grateful for the generosity and love of those who come to our space and share their stories. Many of us are still young, still learning, and have been disconnected from our cultural practices. Those who guide us – including George, Kelly, Gayle, Winnie, Ricky, Kirby, Fabian and Merle – contribute so much to all of our recovery and we are eternally grateful for them.

Throughout the year, the entire Sunshine House community has held space with one another and we will continue to do so during the emotional waves that come before and after September 30. Today and this week we truly hope that everyone that has been directly impacted can find some comfort as they navigate the emotional waves. If you are not one of those directly impacted, please take the opportunity to support those who have in whatever ways you can. It is really important to not ask for their labour today. There is a lot of information available to you — you can start with the entities linked below.

Much love to all of our relations. The staff and community at Sunshine House
